New America After 3PM Study Shows Participation in Afterschool STEM Programs Drops, Even as Demand Increases

The America After 3PM special report, STEM Learning in Afterschool on the Rise, found that just 7.8 million children are enrolled in an afterschool program, down from a high of 10.2 million children in 2014. Children from low-income households dropped from 4.6 million in 2014 to 2.7 million in 2020, while the number of higher-income children in afterschool fell by just under 450,000 over the same period. Among families with low incomes, cost is the number one barrier to afterschool participation.
